How the Four Pillars are built

Every birth moment carries four pairs of characters — one for the year, the month, the day and the two-hour period you were born into.

01

Locate the solar terms

Your birth details and UTC offset are converted to the exact astronomical moment, which is compared with the solar terms that start the Chinese year (Li Chun) and each Chinese month.

02

Fix the four pillars

The year and month stems follow the solar terms; the day pillar follows your local calendar date; the hour branch comes from one of the twelve two-hour periods.

03

Weigh the elements

Stems, branches and their hidden stems are converted into Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, then balanced against your Day Master to suggest favorable elements.

What are the Four Pillars of Destiny?

The Four Pillars — BaZi in Chinese — are four pairs of characters for the year, month, day and hour of birth. Each pair combines a Heavenly Stem with an Earthly Branch, and the eight characters together describe the elemental weather of your birth moment.

How is my chart calculated here?

Your input is turned into a precise instant and checked against the exact solar terms supplied by the open-source lunar-javascript ephemeris. The year pillar changes at Li Chun, each month pillar at its own solar term, the day pillar at local midnight and the hour pillar every two hours.

Why does the time zone change my chart?

Solar terms are exact astronomical events, so the same calendar date can fall in different Chinese months in different parts of the world. Use the UTC offset that applied at your birthplace on that day, including daylight saving time if it was in force.

What is the Day Master?

The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your birth day and stands for you in the chart. Its element and polarity (Yang or Yin) shape how the other seven characters are read, and which elements are considered supportive or draining.

I was born around 23:00 — which hour pillar do I get?

The day is split into twelve two-hour branches, and the Zi hour runs from 23:00 to 01:00. This calculator keeps the day pillar on the calendar date you entered, so a birth between 23:00 and midnight belongs to the Zi hour of that same date: near midnight only the hour branch moves, not the day pillar.

Is my birth data stored anywhere?

No. The whole calculation runs in your browser, and the copy or PDF actions only use what is already on screen. Nothing is uploaded, and no account is needed.
